In the Mid-west, say Iowa, Nebraska, etc. Not so. Tenure of the incumbents in those positions has been a mean of nine years, a median of six; it's most unlikely that the rectors of the parishes in transition were short enough to counterbalance this. Given the state of affairs in the next diocese south, it would have to be associate/curate positions which hold the overall numbers down.

The other thing I've found is something that I did not expect. I too expected to see that transition periods tend to depress numbers (not counting the "interim notch" in the membership, when he has the rolls cleaned), but what I'm finding is that it isn't the circumstance of transition as it is the person. I see many parishes grind/sail through the period without a glitch in the numbers, but if ASA veers off up or down, it's a lead-pipe cinch that the pivot point is when the new rector arrived; and I've also found cases where there is a depression in the numbers which corresponds to an interim's tenure.
C.
